These look wonderful! We ended up taking a 2-week vacation here at the end of August (just got back), so my garden is a sorry sight. Time to pull out bunches of plants and see if anything will still bear. The tomatoes got such a late start, I may only have green ones this year!

Seriously consider cider of them, as well as their eating and baking goodness. Sebasopol is good heirloom gravenstein country also.

Pears: like to do their last month of ripening off the tree, interestingly enough. Keeps those sandy little starch crystals from forming.

There must be a branch of the Rare Fruit Growers folks up near you to discover, for aid in figuring out your pear varietal (as well as swapping plants seeds and info).

Pear goop à la Lise, works for apple butter the same: take about half your amount of fruit to be processed and juice the goodness of it. Slowly simmer this down to volcano stage while you chop up the rest, removing worms, seeds & bruises to the compost. When you add the chopped up bits and a few pieces of vanilla bean (have you discovered World Spice Merchants next to Pike Place yet? http://www.worldspice.com/) till they get soft, put the whole through a food mill (your next necessary purchase as a canner) to remove any last seeds, skins, etc. (and the vanilla) and smooth things out before canning.

What a great idea - I love the idea of a couple of little pet pygora goats.

I had a goat when I was a teenager and she was almost like a dog - following me around and wanting to lie around on the porch with the real dogs. Can't be house trained though - found that out.

Ribbon for measuring the length of each woven piece is going to be immeasurably helpful for me as I get into this set of napkins for an exchange.

I did find at the local crafts / sewing stores, peel-and-stick foot-long stripes measured as rulers; they go handily on rigid heddles, the front of the reed holder on the larger loom, to mark center and inch measures out from the center of things. Useful! Though I do still prefer my neat pencil-marks on the Nisse, the elder Glimåkra four-shaft loom.

I recently started using the ribbons cut to standard lengths, only pinned to the working warp. It works great. I just finished a 14yrd warp using this tool, much success. Color coding and or marking length in Sharpie works for keeping organized. I'd forget the color coding or loose the list, so marking worked better for me. They are totally reusable and easily stored.

Goodness! I didn't realize that JMM was the friend on the peninsula you were hoping to move nearer to! I guess I was vaguely aware that she was somewhere in the PNW, but that was all. I've never had the good fortune to meet her much less to take any of her classes, but I quite enjoy the two DVDs and the one book of hers that I own.

As much as I love living where I do, sometimes I can't help lamenting moving away from WA before I became a weaver and had any idea of the weaving resources in that area. Lucky me that I still have gobs of family there to go visit!
